Fascinating totem poles, the hallmark of northwest coastal art were never intended to evoke religious awe. They rather represent pride in ancestry through emblematic supernatural beings. Images of animals, birds, humans and monsters became crests that were owned by clan founders and used like heraldic designs in a coat of arms.
