EVENING GROSBEAK
COCCOTHRAUSTES VESPERTINUS — EVENING GROSBEAK

I feel so lucky to have seen flocks of these beauties stopping by the farm on one of their erratic migratory pathways. They had a favorite dogwood tree and would cover it completely with their distinctive plumage as they snapped up the winter berries on the tree. They love salt and sunflower seeds and can often be seen enjoying a bath in a puddle or birdbath. Here, a grosbeak reaches for a seed with the range of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains in the far background and a leafless grove of Yellow Delicious Apples in front.
