NORTHERN FLICKER
COLAPTES AURATUS — NORTHERN FLICKER

This big boy from the woodpecker family is a devoted ant eater. His wingspan can reach 21 inches and males boast a big mustache. He and his mate are monogamous and build their nests together before she lays three to twelve white eggs six to twenty feet above ground. He attracts her with a loud, bold wick-er, wick-er note that she finds irresistible. Here, he looks back over his shoulder as though inviting us to join him among the California redwoods in the Prairie Creek State Park near the Oregon border.
