CALLIPEPIA
CALIFORNICA — CALIFORNIA QUAIL
|
||
Watch
these cute families take a dust bath with their little topknots bobbing
and you will be a fan forever. They live the California commune life style
of the 60s in communal broods that contain at least two females, multiple
males and many offspring, foraging together for seeds, leaves, berries,
and bugs. You can watch a “flushing” when they startle in
a short explosion of flight, but they much prefer to run and call “Chicago!”
When ready to produce a family, the female will scrape a hollow in a sheltered
place, line it with leaves and lay up to twelve eggs. |
