YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
XANTHOCEPHALUS XANTHOCEPHALUS — YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD

Another beautiful and distinctively marked bird that loves freshwater marshes, reedy lakes and irrigation ditches, they forage in mud and walk around eating insects, snails, and grains. Also really gregarious, they form breeding colonies and forage together in flocks that may contain millions. No great singer, his song is a high-pitched raspy honking gurgle that ends with a buzz so maybe it’s a good thing that males and females often segregate in separate winter flocks. This boy is perched in a Civil War cemetery on the grounds of Three Bears Farm.
