Unlike his Greek counterpart, Ares, this fierce Roman god of war has a softer side that deals with his namesake month of March. It was the season of wars and campaigns, true, but also of the rebirth of plant life. His main dominion, though, was bloody war and the red planet Mars boasts two little moons named after his Greek cousins: Phobos — fear, and Deimos — terror. Romulus and Remus were Mars' twin sons, the founders of Rome. The god was considered the ancestor of the empire's capitol and its culture. |
