Prarie Fire, Kansas

Prairie Fire, Flint Hills, Kansas

Underlying limestone and chert protected the tall grass prairies from the plow for years. Today, the protected eight-foot high Bluestems, Switchgrass and Indian grasses are confined to a small area near Cottonwood Falls. Nearby, ranchers burn their fields each year to provide oxygen for spring's tender shoots.
