Lake Itasca, Minnesota

Lake Itasca, Minnesota

This pretty lake is the source of the Mississippi River which trickles over a tiny rock barrier giving birth to the great river which then begins its 2,552 mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. The headwaters were found after a 300 year search by Ojibwa Chief Ozaawindit in 1822, then on the payroll of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft.
