Natchez Trace, Mississippi

Stretching diagonally from the Mississippi River northeast into the Tennessee Valley, this 8,000-year-old commercial pathway has known the footfall of prehistoric peoples, armies, pioneers and Spanish conquistadors. Some 300 segments of the 445-mile sunken trace are protected by the National Park Service.
