Fingerlike spires of the Black Hills Needles thrust upward from the plains as they have done for 60 million years. It was just 64 years ago that one of the greatest pieces of public art was completed after 14 years of labor by Idaho-born Gutzon Borglum. Half-million tons of rock were removed to reveal the features of four of America's great presidents, two of whom are seen here.
