Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

Made of ancient rock uplifted from deep below the earth's surface, these mountains, part of the Appalachian system, are among the oldest on the planet. They actually stopped the advance of the glaciers. This is our most popular national park and has been designated an International Biosphere Reserve. Water hydrocarbons give the 800 square mile park the perennial haze that named it.
