Chincoteague Island, Virginia Wild
ponies grazing among dunes and salt marshes belong to the only wild herd
of horses east of the Rockies but romantic stories of wrecked galleons
spilling out ponies are highly speculative. Annual auctions keep the herd
size at 150 animals. This favorite wildlife sanctuary on beach front and
marshland is fringed by evergreen trees shaped by wind and blowing sand. |
