FALCO
SPARVERIUS — AMERICAN KESTREL
|
||
He’s
the most beautiful falcon that is often mistakenly called a Sparrow
Hawk, and while he will dine on an occasional sparrow he definitely doesn’t
belong to the hawk family. He lives in the open country and loves to perch
on a wire like this one. Here he is hunting rodents and might hover over
his prey. Dinner is often a bat, snake, or frog as well which he will
bring to his female and feed her right in mid-air. His three to seven
babies will often be born in a nest box along a highway, a provision that
has encouraged recovery of their declining numbers in the Northeast. |
