STELLER'S JAY
CYANOCITTA STELLERI — STELLER'S JAY

We see this fellow at every western campsite where, along with his family group, he will beg for scraps and steal some too. He loves a good burger but will eat almost anything including snakes, frogs, eggs, insects, and carrion. In winter, 95% of his diet is pine seeds, acorns and fruit. The Steller’s crest marks him as the only crested jay in the west. He was discovered and named for an Arctic explorer, Georg Wilhelm Steller in 1741. A friendly guy, he can mimic the call of other birds, including loons and hawks.
