PHALAENOPTILUS
NUTTALLI — POORWILL
|
||
Here
is an interesting character with odd Nightjar habits like laying eggs
on rocks or even on a flat tarred roof. They are fairly solitary though
the male displays with a spectacular power dive to seal his courtship
bargain. They like to sit on the ground like this one at the Santa Cruz
Arboretum, and are attracted to street and other outdoor lights where
they come to scoop up swarming insects. Unfortunately, he sounds something
like a frog or a rubber band when he tries to sing for his female, though
she apparently likes it since they often produce up to two broods a year. |
